Here it the picture of the change in path material from the Yupon entry garden (gravel) to the side halls under the barrel vaults (travertine?). This could be a good subtle example of indicating an ecotone change.
This photograph is very one dimensional. The change in experience here is very effective here because you change ground material (which effects the sound of your footsteps), you pass into a covered space (effecting the light and forming space around you). The gravel could be great for around trees with a hard surface meandering between.

I do think that some path material changes would make it feel like your going somewhere and would accentuate the environment.
